Alcoholism is a recognized medical disease, which causes people to drink uncontrollably. Alcoholics will consume alcohol until they are well past intoxicated. People who spend most of their time intoxicated are also putting themselves at risk of being in a car accident or work related accident. Due to the fact drinking is the most important thing in an alcoholic’s mind, they often have financial and marital problems, and many alcoholics wind up homeless.
Although it is possible for an alcoholic to quit drinking on their own, most need to go through a medical rehab program, and get continued support after rehabilitation. The rehabilitation program with help the alcoholic safely withdrawal from the alcohol, while providing them with a safe environment. The most popular and successful support program for alcoholics is Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). AA provides support through regular meetings. There are different types of meetings, depending on what the alcoholic is most comfortable with.
