PostHeaderIcon Dental Braces – an alternative to cosmetic dental treatments

Have you always been unhappy about your teeth, but shied away from traditional metal braces? Have you considered dental veneers to straighten teeth, but worried about the damage they can do to your healthy teeth? Now, thanks to the most recent developments in cosmetic dentistry, it is possible to correct your smile permanently, without the need for traditional braces (sometimes referred to as ‘train tracks’) or artificial veneers.

What tooth straighteningoptions are out there?

If you are serious about perfecting your smile, there are a number of cosmetic dental treatment options out there, including porcelain veneers, braces with metal or ceramic brackets, lingual braces which are worn on the inside of your teeth, or the latest virtually invisible tooth straightening technique, Invisalign.

• A porcelain veneer is a thin layer of porcelain bonded over the front surface of a tooth; some of the shiny outer enamel surface of the tooth needs to be removed, to make sure the veneer can be bonded in place. Although veneers are matched with surrounding teeth, they can break off and are not suitable if you have unhealthy or weak teeth, do not have enough tooth enamel or grind your teeth.

• Metal braces, sometimes known as ‘train tracks’, have small brackets which are temporarily bonded to the teeth; a flexible wire runs through all the brackets and allows the position of the teeth to be gradually altered. Metal braces are not removable.

• Braces with ceramic brackets work like traditional braces but are less visible because the brackets are more closely matched to the colour of your teeth

• Lingual braces are similar to traditional metal braces but are fitted on the inside of your teeth and can irritate your tongue. They are left in your mouth until treatment has finished

• Invisalign is a new straightening treatment which offers a comfortable and virtually invisible way to straighten teeth, in as little as 9 to 18 months (depending on the condition of your teeth). Unlike other braces, which are bonded to the teeth, Invisalign uses a series of custom made, clear plastic removable aligners to straighten teeth, without the need for metal brackets and wires. Unlike dental veneers which can be invasive, the Invisalign technique works with your own teeth to create that perfect smile, and once treatment is complete, creates a dental solution that won’t chip off or need replacing. And even though it’s one of the latest developments in cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign is similar in price to metal or ceramic brackets and around half the price of lingual braces.

Whether your smile needs minor improvements or more extensive adjustments, Invisalign can almost certainly help. The Invisalign technique is successful in treating overbites, underbites and a variety of irregularities such as spaces between teeth (‘gappy teeth’), crooked or overlapping teeth and protruding teeth (‘buck teeth’). And unlike traditional braces, Invisalign:
• Is clear: so almost no one will be able to tell that you are wearing braces
• Is removable: you can eat and drink what you want during treatment. You can also brush and floss your teeth more easily to maintain better oral hygiene
• Is comfortable: there are no metal brackets, wires or sharp edges to cause mouth irritation. This also means less time spent your dental practitioner’s chair getting adjustments
• And best of all, because the Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, most people won’t even realise that you’re straightening your teeth during treatment
